What WThumb is for
WThumb makes thumbnails from a reference image you supply, your own words, and optionally a photograph of yourself. One brief can return up to four of them, in the shapes you tick. It is built for creators making thumbnails for their own videos.
Everything below follows from that. These are not rules about taste; they are about what this product is for and what it must not be turned into.
Do not generate
- Sexual, explicit or sexually suggestive imagery of anyone.
- Any sexualised depiction of a minor. There is no context in which this is permitted, and an account we find has attempted it is closed without warning.
- Imagery that harasses, defames, threatens or degrades a person or a group, including on the basis of race, religion, sex, sexuality, disability or nationality.
- Graphic violence, gore, or imagery that glorifies self-harm.
- Imagery that promotes or instructs in illegal activity.
Other people
Use your own photograph. If anyone else is recognizable in what you upload, you must have their permission to use their likeness this way.
Do not use WThumb to place a real person into an image they have not agreed to, to impersonate anyone, or to suggest that somebody said or did something they did not.
Do not use it to make political or electoral material that misrepresents a real person or event.
Other people's work
Starting from a reference thumbnail is how WThumb is meant to be used, and what you take from it is not the design. WThumb treats the reference as a brief rather than a template: it takes the subject, the visual idea and the role each element plays from it, and designs the layout, the typography, the color treatment and the graphic structure itself.
A logo, wordmark or brand symbol in the reference can appear in the result unless you ask for a change. The judgment stays with you: do not pass another channel's mark off as your own, do not copy a design so closely that a viewer would mistake your video for theirs, and do not upload material you have no right to use.
How this is enforced
Every request is screened before an image is made from it, including a request to change a thumbnail you already have. A request refused at this step does not cost you a credit (1 credit makes 1 thumbnail). Only the words you type are checked; your reference image, your photograph and any extra images are not sent for this.
These rules apply whether or not a filter catches a particular request.
When a complaint or a report gives us reason to look, we can read what was asked for, meaning the words you typed and the instructions made from them, one run at a time, and every look is recorded. Your finished thumbnails are not opened, and neither are the reference image and the photograph you uploaded. The exceptions are a screenshot you attach to a support conversation, and the images of a run you ask for help with, once you give your permission; each opening is recorded, and the Privacy Policy says so. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules, which is a decision a person makes, and anything involving a minor is reported where the law requires it.
If something was refused and you believe it should not have been, write to info@wthumb.co and a person will read it.
