FAQ

What people ask when they compare

It depends on how many you make. Among monthly plans, Thumbnail.ai's Lite costs the least to start: $9 a month for 40 credits, one standard result each, at a size its pages do not state. WThumb is next, at $12 a month for 30 credits, one thumbnail each, at 2048 × 1152 ($9 a month billed yearly), against $19 for 1of10's Basic, whose plan card lists its AI thumbnail generator (the FAQ on the same page puts AI generation on its $89 Pro plan), $19 for vidIQ's Boost, $19 or $20 for Thumbfa.st (its pages differ), $20 for VisualKit, $29 for Thumbmagic and $40 for Pikzels. vidIQ's free plan also includes 150 AI credits a month, shared by its AI tools at 22 a thumbnail, and 1of10's pricing page gives its free plan 60 credits a month at 4 a thumbnail. At volume several cost less per thumbnail than the $0.19 of WThumb's largest monthly plan, among them Thumbfa.st at $0.10 to $0.13 (1280 × 720), Thumbnail.ai's Pro and Studio plans at about $0.16 and $0.14 an HD result, and Thumbmagic's yearly Pro plan. ThumbGen's $2 pack is the smallest one-off spend. Prices as of September 2026.

WThumb generates 2048 × 1152 (1152 × 2048 for Shorts) with no upscale step. Pikzels exports 1280 × 720, Thumbmagic's feature pages and 1of10 state 1280 × 720 with 1of10 selling a 4K upscale, Thumbfa.st exports 1280 × 720 PNG, vidIQ's maker a 1280 × 720 PNG and VisualKit 1280 × 720, ThumbGen sells 2K and 4K upscales for extra credits without stating its base size, and Thumbnail.ai offers Standard and HD without stating either size.

WThumb: ask for 16:9, 9:16 or both, and each is recomposed for its frame instead of cropped. Thumbnail.ai's create page also lets one request tick several aspect ratios, without saying how each frame is composed. None of the other seven says one request makes both; 1of10's guide says to switch format and generate again, and Pikzels' API takes one format per request.

WThumb takes the person out of a reference and rebuilds the frame without anyone, so any winning thumbnail can become a faceless one. The others' pages do not describe this; Thumbmagic's faceless option puts an avatar in your place, Thumbfa.st's Anonymize puts a grey mannequin in each person's place, Thumbnail.ai has a No Person option, and VisualKit designs faceless thumbnails from a description.

WThumb's library holds thousands of thumbnails from popular channels, each scored by its views over its channel's median, free with an account and one click from Recreate. 1of10 runs an outlier database across YouTube, 5 results on its free plan and full on its paid plans, and vidIQ an Outliers search, 8 results a search on its free plan and unlimited on Boost.

New WThumb accounts get 2 free credits, one thumbnail each, Thumbmagic gives 3 free thumbnails and Thumbfa.st 5 with a watermark, none with a card. vidIQ's free plan includes 150 AI credits a month, shared by its AI tools at 22 a thumbnail, and its help center says free plans include a limited number of thumbnails. 1of10's pricing page gives its free plan 60 credits a month at 4 a thumbnail, while its generator page says AI thumbnails need a paid plan. Pikzels and VisualKit offer trials without stating their size, Thumbnail.ai's free maker is a manual editor with no free AI credits stated, and ThumbGen's pages differ between 30 free credits and a $2 trial.

A typical thumbnail takes about 30 seconds on every plan, and it comes out finished at 2048 × 1152 (1152 × 2048 for Shorts), with nothing to upscale or export.

No. There is no canvas and there are no layers. Start from a YouTube link, an uploaded image or a short description of your video, add your title and a photo if you want your face in it, and WThumb returns a finished 16:9 or 9:16 JPEG. Changes are asked for in plain words.

No. A template is a fixed layout you fill in. WThumb reads your reference as a brief, not a template: the idea carries over, and the design is new, built around your title and your photo, or no photo. You can also start from a description alone.

Yes. Press the pencil on a finished thumbnail and describe the change, for example bigger words, a night background or a more surprised face. WThumb makes a new version with that change. Each revision uses 1 credit, and there is no limit on revisions.

Yes. Describe the video in a sentence and WThumb designs from that alone, or paste the link of a YouTube video whose thumbnail you like and use it as the reference. A photo of yourself is optional.

Yes. Write your title and any other words in any language, and WThumb puts them in the design.

Yes. WThumb makes YouTube thumbnails in 16:9 and YouTube Shorts thumbnails in 9:16, as a 2048 × 1152 or 1152 × 2048 JPEG with no watermark.
