YouTube playlist thumbnail: how to add it, the size, and what it should say

The steps to add or change a YouTube playlist thumbnail on a computer and a phone, the size to use when YouTube's page gives none, and a rule for what a series cover should say, with a brief to paste into WThumb.

A white folder outline with a red card sliding out of its open top, headline: PLAYLIST THUMBNAILS

A YouTube playlist thumbnail is the one image that stands for a whole series on your channel page, and it has to promise the series rather than any single episode. As of September 2026, YouTube's Add a playlist thumbnail page gives four steps for a computer (open the playlist, select Edit, select Choose from library, pick the photo) and states no size, ratio or format. This post gives the steps for a computer and a phone, the size to use when the page gives none, and a rule for what the cover should say.

We do not say whether a custom cover raises views, because we do not know your channel, and YouTube's page does not claim it either. The cover's job is narrower: make the playlist read as one thing, so a viewer who liked one episode can see there are more.

What a playlist thumbnail is for

This section covers what the playlist cover does and where a viewer meets it. An episode thumbnail promises one video. A playlist cover promises the next ten, and it is judged next to your own other playlists, not next to a rival's video.

Where it shows up. As of September 2026, YouTube's Customize your YouTube channel layout page says the Home tab can hold up to 12 custom sections, that the default layout includes a Created playlists section, and that a Playlists section can highlight single, created and multiple playlists. The page does not say how each section draws the cover, so we do not quote a size; on any channel page it is one tile among others, never the full screen.

What that means for the design. The cover is a label on a shelf, so it has to be readable as a tile and different from its neighbors. A budget cooking series and a knife skills series should not share a color scheme, or the shelf becomes one gray band.

A concrete example. A cooking channel with three series: SUNDAY MEAL PREP, KNIFE SKILLS and PANTRY ONLY. Three covers, three colors, three subjects: containers, a blade, a shelf of jars. Each promises the set, not episode four. More kitchen subjects are in the cooking thumbnail ideas.

How to add a playlist thumbnail on a computer

This section gives the computer steps as YouTube publishes them, then how to change the cover later and who can do it. As of September 2026, YouTube's Add a playlist thumbnail page for computers lists four steps under Use an image.

  1. Open your playlist.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Select Choose from library.
  4. Pick the photo you'd like to use as the playlist thumbnail.

The same page says the image can be one you already have on your device, a new picture from your camera, or one you create using AI, but the computer tab gives steps for the first only. The page lists no text, filter or sticker step for computers, so the file is set as it is.

How to change it later

The page gives no separate steps for replacing a cover, so changing one is adding one: open the playlist, select Edit, choose a new image, and the new file takes the place of the old. Do it the same day you rename a playlist, so the title and the picture make one promise.

Who can do it

The playlist page states no eligibility rule. As of September 2026, YouTube's Learn about feature access for YouTube Creators page lists Create a playlist as a standard feature, lists Custom thumbnails as an intermediate feature with a limited daily limit before phone verification and a higher one after, and says intermediate features need a verified phone number. Neither page says whether a playlist cover counts under that Custom thumbnails line, so we do not know. If Edit shows no image option, verify the phone number first; it costs nothing.

How to add one on Android and iPhone

This section covers the phone app, which offers more routes than the computer. As of September 2026, YouTube's Add a playlist thumbnail page for Android lists three methods, and the iPhone and iPad tab of the same page lists the same three.

Choose from library

Open your playlist, select Edit, select Choose from library, then pick the photo. The page says you can optionally add text, filters or stickers to your image before it is set. If the image already carries its words, skip the app's text; two layers of words on one small tile is one too many.

Take photo

Open your playlist, select Edit, select Take photo. Text, filters and stickers are offered here too. This route suits a physical set: a workbench, a bookshelf, the corner where the show is recorded, with the series name added over it.

Create with AI

Open your playlist, select Edit, select Create with AI. As of September 2026, the same Add a playlist thumbnail page for Android says to pick a theme to get options, that you can change a few words in the description to get more options, and then to select Create. The page does not describe the sizes it produces or how the image relates to your videos, so we do not say. The computer tab of the page does not list this option.

What size a playlist thumbnail should be

This section gives the size to use when YouTube gives none, and the one exception. As of September 2026, YouTube's Add a playlist thumbnail page states no size, aspect ratio or file format for a playlist cover. The safe assumption is the video thumbnail spec, because the cover is shown in the same 16:9 tile.

As of September 2026, YouTube's Add custom thumbnails on YouTube page recommends a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos with a minimum width of 640 pixels, image formats such as JPG or PNG, and, for videos, an aspect ratio of 16:9. It sets the file size limit by device: 2 MB for video thumbnails on mobile, 50 MB on desktop. A 16:9 JPEG or PNG wider than 640 pixels meets every line; from a phone, keep it under 2 MB. The full spec is in YouTube thumbnail size: the exact dimensions.

Podcast playlists are square

The exception is a podcast. As of September 2026, the same Add custom thumbnails on YouTube page says that for podcast playlists you upload a thumbnail with an aspect ratio of 1:1 instead of 16:9, and YouTube's Create a podcast in YouTube Studio page recommends 1280x1280 pixels for the square podcast thumbnail, asks for it when you create a podcast or add podcast features to a playlist, and says you can remove podcast features in the Podcasts menu if you do not want one.

So a podcast show image is a square file made for that setting. We output 16:9 and 9:16 only, so that square file is a different job. The episode thumbnails inside the show are regular video thumbnails, covered in how to make a podcast thumbnail for YouTube.

What the cover should say

This section gives the rule for the words on a playlist cover. The cover says the series name or the series promise, in two or three words, and never an episode hook. An episode hook (I QUIT, DON'T BUY THIS) promises one moment. On a shelf that will hold twenty episodes, that promise is wrong nineteen times.

Name or promise. If the series has a name people say out loud, use it: BUDGET KITCHEN, ROOKIE TO PRO. If not, use the promise the whole set keeps: EVERY EPISODE, START HERE, ONE CAR ONE YEAR. Test each candidate: is it true of episode one and of episode fifteen? STOP DOING THIS fails; 30 DAY FIXES passes.

Two or three words. The cover is a tile in a row, and a fourth or fifth word will not be read. WEEKLY REPAIRS beats WHAT I FIXED THIS WEEK. If the name is long, shorten it; the playlist title beside it carries the full name.

What the picture does. The picture carries the subject and the mood; the words carry the name. A series about mechanical keyboards shows one keyboard, and the words say BUILD LOG, not I RUINED MY SWITCHES. For which promise suits which subject, see YouTube thumbnail ideas sorted by what they promise.

A brief to paste

  • Words. Line one: the series name, two or three words in capitals (BUDGET KITCHEN). Line two, optional: the size of the set or the promise (EVERY EPISODE, 12 PARTS). No third line.
  • Instructions. Series cover, not an episode: one object that stands for the whole series, calm framing, one strong color no other playlist on this channel uses, words readable as a small tile.

When the default cover is fine

This section says when to leave the default alone, because a custom cover is not always worth a thumbnail. Set nothing and the playlist shows the thumbnail of one of its own videos; YouTube's playlist thumbnail page does not say which, and in our experience it is the one at the top of the list. Two cases make that borrowed thumbnail the right answer.

The playlist is a folder. A playlist that only groups videos (All live streams, Shorts 2026, Clips) is a folder, not a series. Nobody browses to it for a promise; they land in it from a video. The borrowed thumbnail is fine and a custom cover buys nothing.

The first episode already says it. If episode one's thumbnail carries the series name and subject (a big THE 30 DAY BUILD over a workbench), it is already a series cover. Put that video first and stop. Make a custom cover when episode one's thumbnail is an episode hook (DAY ONE WENT WRONG) that misdescribes the set, or when the strongest episode sits eighth and the first one is weak.

The test in one line. Does the borrowed thumbnail make a true promise about the whole playlist? Yes: leave it. No: make a cover. The same test keeps you from making a cover for a playlist that will hold three videos forever.

How to do this in WThumb

This section is the flow for a 16:9 playlist cover. It takes one run of about thirty seconds, and new accounts get two free credits (1 credit = 1 thumbnail), no card needed.

  1. Pick the reference. Paste the YouTube link of the strongest episode; WThumb fetches only that video's public thumbnail. Or upload a reference image (PNG, JPEG or WebP). The reference is a brief, not a template: the subject, the idea and the energy carry over, and the design is new.
  2. Type the words, up to three lines. BUDGET KITCHEN on line one, EVERY EPISODE on line two. Then one line of instructions: series cover, one object for the whole set, one strong color, no episode hook.
  3. Add your photo or leave it out. Add it and you are placed in the design. Skip it and the cover is faceless: the person in the reference is removed and the space filled in the same style. Nobody else's face is ever put in.
  4. Tick 16:9, one or two designs. A playlist cover is 16:9; two designs give you a choice for the shelf.
  5. Wait about thirty seconds. The output is a Full HD+ JPEG. Save it, then on YouTube open the playlist, select Edit, select Choose from library and pick the file.

The @1 trick for a series object

If the series is built around one thing (a van, the show's logo), attach its picture and write the van from @1 as the single object. Up to four extra images work this way, as @1 to @4, briefs too, not templates.

Two designs, then revise

Press the pencil on the design you keep and describe one change in plain words (warmer color, larger words), and WThumb makes a new version. Each revision costs one credit, and it works later too, from the reopened conversation. Your words pass a moderation check first; a refused request is never generated and costs nothing.

An episode thumbnail sells one video. A playlist thumbnail sells the next ten.

Common questions

Can you change a YouTube playlist thumbnail after creating it?
Yes. As of September 2026, YouTube's Add a playlist thumbnail page gives one route and no separate steps for a playlist that already has a cover: open the playlist, select Edit, select Choose from library (on a phone, also Take photo or Create with AI) and pick the image, which takes the place of the current one. The page lists no remove step either, so the way to change a cover is to set a new one.
What size is a YouTube playlist thumbnail?
YouTube does not publish one. As of September 2026, YouTube's Add a playlist thumbnail page names no size, ratio or format. The cover is shown in the same 16:9 tile as a video thumbnail, so the safe choice is the video spec. As of September 2026, YouTube's Add custom thumbnails on YouTube page recommends 16:9, JPG or PNG, a minimum width of 640 pixels, a resolution of 3840 x 2160, and a file size limit that depends on the device you upload from. A podcast playlist is the exception and takes a square image instead.
Does a podcast playlist need a square image?
Yes, if the playlist has podcast features. As of September 2026, YouTube's Create a podcast in YouTube Studio page asks for a square podcast thumbnail when you create a podcast or add podcast features to a playlist, recommends 1280x1280 pixels for it, and says that if you do not want one you can remove podcast features in the Podcasts menu. The same page says YouTube sometimes classifies a playlist as a podcast on its own, so if a regular series is suddenly asked for a square image, that is the reason, and the same remove step applies.
Can I use a video's own thumbnail as the playlist cover?
Yes, in two ways. Set nothing, and the playlist shows the thumbnail of one of its own videos, which changes if that video moves or leaves. Or save the video's thumbnail to your device and set it through Choose from library, which fixes it as the cover whatever happens to the order later. Whether that is wise depends on the words: a thumbnail that names the series works as a cover, while one that hooks a single episode (I QUIT) misdescribes the set. If it is close but not right, use it as the reference for a new cover.
Does the playlist cover change the thumbnails of the videos inside it?
No. The playlist cover is one image attached to the playlist, and each video keeps its own thumbnail on its watch page, in search and in the playlist's list of videos. The two are set in different places: the cover through the playlist's Edit control, the video thumbnails through each video's details in YouTube Studio. That separation is the point. The cover can say the series name while every episode thumbnail says its own hook, and a viewer who opens the playlist sees both, the set and the episodes, without either one pretending to be the other.
Does the playlist thumbnail show in search?
It can. As of September 2026, YouTube's Advanced search (Filters) page says you can filter results by type and lists playlist among the types, so a playlist can be a search result, shown with its thumbnail. We do not know how often a playlist surfaces in search, and YouTube's playlist thumbnail page does not list the places the cover appears, so treat search as a bonus rather than the goal. The surface you control is your channel page, and that is where the cover should be judged: as a small tile next to your other playlists.
