YouTube Shorts dimensions come down to one shape and three numbers. The video is 9:16 or square, it runs up to 3 minutes, and its custom thumbnail is 9:16 as well, at a size YouTube names and many guides leave out. The video and the thumbnail are two files with two sets of rules, and most confusion about Shorts size comes from treating them as one.
Every YouTube rule below comes from YouTube's own help pages and blog, read in September 2026, and names the page it came from. Where YouTube gives no number, as with a safe zone for the Shorts player, we say so rather than invent one. The table comes first; each section after it explains a row.
YouTube Shorts dimensions at a glance
As of September 2026, YouTube's Upload YouTube Shorts page asks for a video up to 3 minutes long with a square or vertical aspect ratio, and its Add custom thumbnails page gives the thumbnail's numbers. The table keeps what YouTube says in one column and what we suggest in another, so a common habit is never passed off as a YouTube rule.
| Item | What YouTube says | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|
| Video shape | Square or vertical | 9:16, the full phone screen |
| Video size | No pixel size on the upload page; 1080p at most when made in the YouTube app | 1080 by 1920 pixels |
| Video length | Up to 3 minutes | As long as the idea needs, up to 3 minutes |
| Thumbnail shape | 9:16 | 9:16, designed tall rather than cropped |
| Thumbnail size | 2160 by 3840 recommended, at least 640 pixels tall | 1080 by 1920 or larger |
| Thumbnail file | JPG or PNG, up to 50 MB from a computer | A JPG, well under the limit |
| Where it is set | A custom image only in YouTube Studio on a computer; a frame from the video in the app | Studio on a computer, for a designed image |
The rows that trip people up are the video size, where YouTube names no number, and the thumbnail size, where the number is larger than most guides give. For the 16:9 thumbnail of a regular video the numbers are different, and they are in the YouTube thumbnail size guide for regular videos.
What aspect ratio is a YouTube Short?
A YouTube Short is 9:16 or square. The Upload YouTube Shorts page, read in September 2026, asks for a video file with a square or vertical aspect ratio, so 1:1 qualifies as well as the tall 9:16 most Shorts use. 9:16 wins in practice because it is the shape of a phone held upright: it fills the screen, where a square leaves part of it empty.
A horizontal 16:9 clip does not meet that description, however short it is. If you want the same footage as a Short, reframe it to 9:16 in your editing app instead of placing the wide picture in a tall frame with black bars above and below. YouTube's Video resolution and aspect ratios page, read the same month, says the YouTube video player automatically adapts to the size of each individual video, and that padding interferes with its ability to change the player to your video size. Export at the real shape and let the player do the rest.
Is 1920 x 1080 a YouTube Short?
No. 1920 by 1080 is the 16:9 landscape size that page lists as 1080p HD, the shape of a regular video. A Short at the same detail is the same two numbers turned on their side: 1080 by 1920. The same mix-up happens with thumbnails, where a 1920 by 1080 image is a video thumbnail and never a Shorts one.
YouTube Shorts resolution: 1080 by 1920, and when bigger is worth it
1080 by 1920 is the size to export a Short at: full HD, upright. The computer upload steps on the Upload YouTube Shorts page name no pixel size at all. YouTube's Create YouTube Shorts page, read in September 2026, adds a note to the app's creation steps: you can upload Short videos with a maximum resolution of 1080p. So 1080 by 1920 is the one size that is safe on every route into Shorts.
Larger vertical files exist: turn YouTube's 16:9 list on its side and 3840 by 2160, the 4K size, becomes 2160 by 3840. Export that large only when the footage was shot that large and the detail matters, such as fine text on a screen; upscaling a 1080 clip adds pixels, not detail. None of the pages read that day promises anything above 1080p for a Short, so treat a bigger export as a sharper master file, not a promise of sharper playback.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to 3 minutes. As of September 2026, the Upload YouTube Shorts page asks for a short video file up to 3 minutes long, and the Create YouTube Shorts page says the app's tools let you record one or more clips that add up to three minutes. If a guide tells you 60 seconds, check its date: the pages read in September 2026 say 3 minutes.
Length changes nothing about the size: a 20 second Short and a 3 minute one are the same 9:16 frame and take the same 9:16 thumbnail.
The Shorts safe zone: what the player covers
YouTube publishes no official safe zone for Shorts. None of the help pages we read in September 2026 gives one in pixels or percentages, so any figure you meet in a guide is that guide's estimate. What YouTube does have is a player that draws its own layer over every Short: the title and channel name along the bottom of the screen, and a column of buttons down the right edge.
So the working rule is a margin: keep words, faces and anything the viewer must read in the upper two thirds of the frame and away from the right edge, and leave the bottom strip to YouTube's text. The same habit carries over to the thumbnail: in the tall tiles of a Shorts shelf or a channel's Shorts tab, the title and view count sit over or under the lower part of the image, so the words go at the top there too.
YouTube Shorts thumbnail size: 2160 by 3840, 9:16
The YouTube Shorts thumbnail size is 2160 by 3840 pixels at 9:16. As of September 2026, YouTube's Add custom thumbnails page asks for a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos and 2160 x 3840 for Shorts, with a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts, in image formats such as JPG or PNG. For Shorts, the same page says, try to upload a thumbnail with an aspect ratio of 9:16.
The file limit depends on the route, and a Short has only one. The same page gives 2 MB for video thumbnails from a phone and 50MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails from a desktop, and says custom Shorts thumbnails are currently only available to add in YouTube Studio on a computer. So a Shorts thumbnail has 50 MB of room, and a JPG at 2160 by 3840 fits it easily.
1080 by 1920 is the common working size, and it uploads: anything at 9:16 and at least 640 pixels tall is accepted. To turn an image you already have into a tall file without stretching it, the free YouTube thumbnail resizer exports 1080 by 1920 with Fit or Fill. To check a file first, the free size and quality checker has a Shorts setting that reads it against YouTube's 2160 by 3840 and 640 pixel numbers.
Who can add a custom Shorts thumbnail, and where it shows
Custom Shorts thumbnails are new. YouTube's blog post Making thumbnails easier on YouTube, dated July 24, 2026, says YouTube Partner Program creators can start uploading custom thumbnails for Shorts, and that YouTube will expand this to more creators over time. The same post says desktop users can choose from three suggested thumbnail frames for Shorts, while the mobile app still lets you pick any frame from the video.
Two conditions sit on top of that. The Add custom thumbnails page says your account must be verified to use this feature, which is the phone number step, and the upload happens in YouTube Studio on a computer, under Content, then Shorts. With only a phone you can still pick a frame; change a Shorts thumbnail after posting has both routes step by step.
Where it shows is less documented. YouTube's help pages say how to set a Shorts thumbnail, not where it appears, so treat these as places to check: your channel's Shorts tab, where every tile is a thumbnail, search results for the Short's title, and the Shorts shelf on your channel's Home tab. Inside the swipe player a Short starts playing as it arrives, so the thumbnail has no job there. It works where a Short is still a tile.
Why a cropped 16:9 thumbnail fails in 9:16
A 9:16 slice out of a 16:9 image keeps about 32% of its width. The arithmetic: a 16:9 frame 1920 pixels wide is 1080 pixels tall, and a 9:16 slice 1080 pixels tall is about 608 pixels wide, which is 0.32 of 1920. Everything in the outer two thirds of the landscape design is gone.
The outer two thirds is usually where the design lives, so the center slice tends to hold half a face, the middle of a word, or the gap between them. A vertical thumbnail is a different arrangement of the same idea, with the words at the top and the subject large beneath them. What changes in a vertical thumbnail goes through each choice.
Vertical video with a 16:9 thumbnail: the 4:5 auto thumbnail
Put a 16:9 thumbnail on a vertical video and YouTube will not show it everywhere. As of September 2026, the Add custom thumbnails page says vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails will be replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore, and subscription pages, so viewers there see a frame you did not choose. The same page says your custom image still appears on the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms.
The fix is the shape: give a vertical video a 9:16 thumbnail, and there is nothing to replace. If a thumbnail seems to change from page to page, the 4:5 auto thumbnail is one of five causes in why your YouTube thumbnail keeps changing, each with its own check.
How to do this in WThumb
The thumbnail is the part WThumb makes, not the Short. Its 9:16 result is a Full HD+ JPEG at 1152 by 2048 pixels, an exact 9:16 that clears YouTube's 640 pixel minimum height, so it uploads to Studio as it is. There are two ways to get one.
- Start a new design. Choose Recreate a thumbnail and paste a YouTube link or upload an image, or choose From a prompt and describe the video. Then pick 9:16, or 16:9 and 9:16 together. The reference is a brief, not a template: the idea carries over and the design is new, composed for the tall frame.
- Add words and a photo, or neither. Up to three lines of words, placed high in the frame, or No text. Add your photo to be in it; skip it for a faceless design, where the person in the reference is removed and nobody else's face is placed.
- Or turn a finished 16:9 result into 9:16. Press Make the Shorts version on a finished 16:9 WThumb thumbnail and it is rebuilt for the tall frame, not cropped. It goes one way, from 16:9 to 9:16, and each thumbnail gets one Shorts version.
- Upload it in Studio on a computer. Download the JPEG, open YouTube Studio, then Content and Shorts, and upload it under Thumbnail.
When you already have the image
If a 9:16 image exists and only its size is wrong, you do not need a new design: the free resizer's 1080 by 1920 export fits or fills it into the tall frame. A new design takes about 30 seconds. New accounts get 2 free credits (1 credit = 1 thumbnail), no card needed, and a Shorts version uses 1 credit as well.
